Reliable Help for Sleep Apnea Patients

Sleep Apnea or OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) is a breathing disorder that occurs while you sleep. The airway becomes completely blocked and hampers breathing. This momentary lack of oxygen prompts the brain to wake you.

Even though someone suffering from OSA might wake up several times in the night, they may have no recollection of it. Many patients who live alone, are not aware that they suffer from OSA for many years.

Snoring can be a symptom of OSA and is caused when the airway gets partially blocked. While we sleep, our muscles relax, including the tongue and throat muscles. The soft tissue at the back of your throat can sag and make the airway narrow. Due to this, the incoming air makes the tissue at the rear roof of your mouth (the soft palate), the flap of skin hanging from the palate (uvula) and throat vibrate, thus causing the snoring noise.

Even though snoring in itself is no great problem, however, loud snoring can be a sign of OSA.

Do you suffer from OSA? - OSA is notoriously under-diagnosed with less than 25% of cases in the community being identified.

  • Do you and your partner sleep in separate rooms due to loud snoring?
  • Do you doze off unintentionally during the day?
  • Do you often wake up feeling tired or having a headache?
  • Do you have problems concentrating for long periods of time?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may be suffering from sleep apnea and it is essential that you seek the right treatment option.

Is the SomnoDent® the right treatment option for me?
If you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or snore, the SomnoDent® MAS should benefit you. It will almost certainly put an end to your snoring and there's every change that it will eliminate or significantly reduce your OSA. For you and your bed partner, this means peace and quiet again and a better night’s sleep. As a result, you will be less likely to suffer from headaches and daytime sleepiness and your ability to concentrate will improve.

For the treatment of OSA, SomnoDent is worn during sleep to maintain the patency of the upper airway by increasing its dimensions and reducing collapsibility. SomnoDent is a custom-made appliance, comprised of upper and lower dental plates with a unique patented fin-coupling component, which allows normal mouth opening and closing.

When is it worn?
SomnoDent is worn when you sleep. The appliance is very discrete, allowing you to close your lips so it is not obvious that you are wearing it.

Is it comfortable?
SomnoDent is extremely comfortable. Why? Because it is custom made to fit your mouth and it does not impinge on your tongue. You can open and close your mouth normally as SomnoDent does not lock or fix your jaws together.

What if I wear dentures?
The Edent can be worn by patients without any upper or lower teeth. Your dentist will assess your suitability for an Edent implant.

What will Dr. Shokeen do?
Dr. Shokeen will thoroughly examine your teeth and mouth to confirm your oral health status, as well as ensuring that you are dentally appropriate for the appliance. Dental impressions are required to fabricate the SomnoDent. These are then sent to the SomnoMed laboratory where the appliance is made. Once custom made for you, the appliance will be fitted by your SomnoMed dentist who will instruct you on how to insert and remove it yourself, including how to clean and care for your SomnoDent.
